10 Teachers to Follow on Twitter

Last weekend I received a direct message on Twitter from a teacher that saying that she had just signed up for Twitter, but didn't "get it yet" and wanted my help. This wasn't the first time that I've gotten an email or a Twitter message asking for help getting started on Twitter. My 140 character advice is generally, "Twitter is like an ever-expanding conversation. The more people you follow, the more you learn." The follow-up question is almost always who should I follow? Here are ten teachers on Twitter that share a lot of resources and ideas. All ten of these people genuinely want to help teachers learn through Twitter.

Lee Kolbert
Sue Waters
William Graziadei
Colette Cassinelli
Jenny Luca
Angela Maiers
Kevin Jarrett
Tom Barrett
Liz B. Davis
Skip Zalneraitis

This list is by no means all inclusive. There are so many good people to pick from that I struggled to narrow it to ten people. In selecting I tried to include people from a variety of timezones because Twitter is a global network.

If you're on Twitter and would like to connect with other teachers, please leave a comment containing your Twitter name. If you want to follow me, click this link.

Hi Richard-

Are you too modest to put your own name the list? :o)

If I hit the lottery, I'm paying your way to China. That's how sincerely I wanted you to have that chance. BUT, it would be hard to get along without your support if you couldn't do the trip and keep up FTfT. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks for the recommendations on who to follow. Some of the people have fizzled out and are not posting good information anymore. This was a great way to refresh my twitter following list. Keep up the great work on the new website too. Love the domain!

Thank you everyone for the comments and feedback. This blog post is now the most popular and most commented on post I've ever written. It speaks to the power and popularity of Twitter as a resource for developing PLN's.

Skip, I really appreciate your sentiments about my canceled trip to China.

Lee, thank you for inviting me to participate in the Voicethread.

Everyone, make sure you check out the resources that Kern and Liz posted.

Principal's Page, I wanted the first list to be about people that are in K-12 classrooms on a daily basis. My next list will include administrators and tech consultants.

I didn't include myself in the list, but I did link to my Twitter account in the last paragraph. For those interested in following me you can find me at twitter.com/rmbyrne

I would disagree with the comment "the more you follow, the more you learn." I think there has to be "quality" vs. quantity... I don't understand how people have the energy or time to follow hundreds or thousands of people...

Mr. Byrne said...

Richard,
Thank you for you comment.

I agree there is a "quantity vs. quality" argument to be made regarding how many people to follow. There is a point at which it is very difficult to keep up with all of the people in your Twitter network. For me that number was 1000. But what I realized at that point was that I was still reading just as many good things as when I followed only 300. However, there is more "chatter" mixed in. But out of that "chatter" comes more good reading.

I think of following 1000's as being a fly on the wall at a very large cocktail party. If there is only a dozen people, the listening can get boring after a while. If there are hundreds, there will be little groups that form and you can listen to the conversations in all of those groups. At the end of the night, I'm probably more likely to have heard more good conversation from the party of 100's than I was at the party of only a dozen.

One of the things that helps me follow and keep the Twitter conversations straight is to use the groups function on TweetDeck. That alone made following a couple thousand people an easier and better experience.

Thank you so much for the information. My wife is a teacher and we started a business to help teachers buy and sell eduction supplies from each other. It's basically a classified ad system for teachers. We don't really have a budget for advertising so we want to reach teachers and Twitter seems to be a good way but it's been hard to understand how to reach teachers until I read your info. Thanks!
