Great Google Maps/ Earth How-to Videos

Joe Wood is an educator in the Sacramento, California area that I met at NECC 2009. Joe has put together a great collection of resources related to teaching with Google Earth and Google Maps. If you've never created content on Google Earth or Google Maps because you weren't sure how to do it, watch the two videos created by Joe and embedded below. For written tutorials as well as great ideas for using Google Earth and Google Maps in your classroom, visit Joe Wood's Google Earth in the Classroom wiki.

Good Morning,
Thank you so much for these two videos on Google Maps and Google Earth. I am using the idea right now with my 8th graders, they are creating a "Unique Tour of Maine" - their final project for our unit on Maine.
Unfortunately, several of my students follow your directions for moving their placemarks and setting the picture, but Google Earth isn't saving them; they are totally wiped out when they close and reopen. Any suggestions? Have you heard of Google Earth doing this before? Strangely, it isn't all my students, yet they have State computers that each have the same image, so the same original settings.
Thanks,
Megan Rice
p.s. any idea how to import the kwz file into Google Earth on the iPhone?

Hi Megan,
I haven't heard of that happening to some and not others as you're describing. If it's a persistent problem, I would try having the kids export their data to a KMZ before closing out of GE. That way they have a back-up which they can import if necessary.
Regarding the iPhone, I haven't used one enough (ATT coverage is terrible here, so I don't have one) to offer any advice there.

Great videos! Part 1 on Google Maps worked like a charm for us. FYI, our Google Earth snap shots do not save either. We "Save Place As" but when we double click on the .kmz file, it's all gone. Just thought I'd post it again in case anyone knows what I'm doing wrong. (I'm using Windows, not Macs, but that shouldn't matter?!)
