How-to Week, Day 1 - Using Wikispaces

One of the things that I learned by presenting at MLTI's Summer Institute is that despite my belief that editing wikis and blogs should be core skills, there are a lot of teachers who don't know how to do those things. Therefore, each day this week I will post a tutorial about some of the basics of using blogs and wikis. Today's tutorial is about using Wikispaces.

Embedded below is a slideshow outlining the basics of setting up a Wikispaces wiki.

Embedded below is a video tutorial that I created about setting up a Wikispaces wiki.

If you're not sure what a wiki is or you're looking for a video introduction to show to other teachers, Common Craft's Wikis in Plain English is the best explanation you could hope for.

What a treat to find a collection of Richard Byrne posts in my Reader. Because I just signed up for the feed, I was given a collection of your posts and they are wonderful. I have previously set up a wiki for a course I took this summer so I have some familiarity with the process. You have explained it simply and easily so I will have more background when I want to add a useful tool, like videos. I have had little use for wikis in the past but like everything else on line I want to utilize tools that can help my learning curve to grow. The things I learn by creating a wiki will help me down the line at some unknown fork in the road.
Online learning reminds me of a video game of sorts. You travel the path, collecting tools and power along the way, make connections and alliances with others, and work toward a goal facing unanticipated obstacles at every turn.

As an MLTI novice, it's great to find this Wiki information! Thanks for introducing me to technology and taking the overwhelming sense of not knowing what to do with it away.

Thank you for this post. I just signed up for a wikispace account and could use some pointers.

Thank you for the info on wikis! I am just starting my own wiki this year and have found myself at a loss as to how to incorporte it in my 6th grade math/science classes. Anyone out there want to mentor me?

Thanks for this useful information. I am going to use this with my class for posting their knowledge about learning Mandarin.
Thanks Simone
