Weekend Workshop - Make a Wiimote Whiteboard

If you would like to have an interactive whiteboard in your classroom, but your school can't afford one of the commercial offerings (those things are wicked expensive) don't despair because there is a very affordable alternative. Nintendo's Wii remote can be used to create an interactive whiteboard. The first time I saw a Wiimote Whiteboard was in a TED Talk given by Johnny Lee. The videos and links below will provide you with what you need to know to build your own Wiimote Interactive Whiteboard.

Here's Johnny Lee introducing the Wiimote Whiteboard at TED.

Here's Johnny Lee showing you how to assemble the needed parts.

To get more directions and to download the free software from Johnny Lee, visit his website.

All Together We Can Learn has a twenty page PDF about building and using the Wiimote Whiteboard.

I've seen this before, but every time I see it I think it is a great idea. One of these days I am actually going to try it and see how well it works.

Another wiimote whiteboard that is worthy to get noticed is Smoothboard. Though Smoothboard is based on the idea of Johnny Lee, but this Smoothboard has been modified to be a more user friendly whiteboard. With its new annotation features and autoconnect mode, I believe it will be worthy to try it out (www.smoothboard.net).

Happy trying!

If you can use an lcd display taken off of a laptop and mounted on to a overhead projector. Attach the wiimote at the top of the overhead... I bet you could have a cheap overhead projector lcd screeen as well.

search homemade overhead lcd projectors to make one.

Johnny Lee came up with the idea in 2007, but it has come a long way since. Pentabulous is out there for the simplicity lovers, and Smoothboard will continually surprise you with hidden features that are designed for teachers... check out the other software, too.

I made one of these a few months back and it works well. I like the idea of running a power line to the Wiimote so that you don't have to recharge the batteries. It just takes a little soldering of wires to the wiimote and usb plug.

hello, french teacher using wiimote since 2 weeks. I have found a very interesting website yesterday ==>there<==. Have a look. I think the most important thing in the TIC is that the students can take your white board written at school back home, and practice again the course. I wrote some javascripts for that. You can see them here.

I use this in my classroom, but am a little sad to see that Boon Jin's smoothboard now requires payment. I am looking for another open source that is comparable, as I was using the smoothboard before. I wrote a grant last year, and we now have 10 of these in our school. www.youtube.com/ilovechefwilliam
