Ning Adds New Apps

Ning, the free platform for creating your own social network, has just announced new applications to include in your network. Some of the applications that could be of use to educators are Social Giving, Huddle Workspaces, and Poll Daddy.

Applications for Education
The Ning Social Giving application could be used as a fund-raising option for PTA groups, sports teams, and extra-curricular clubs that have created a Ning network.
Huddle Workspaces gives members of your Ning network a place to share work and collaborate on the creation of new content. Poll Daddy gives you a tool for quickly gathering informal data from your students. For example, I use a poll on my classroom blog to get a sense of how my students are feeling about an upcoming quiz.

9/11 A Remembrance in Film

Snag Films has a collection of films about and related to 9/11. The collection is called 9/11: A Remembrance in Film. If you're looking for compelling material to use in class tomorrow, you should explore these options.

Make History - Collective Telling of 9/11 Stories

Tomorrow marks the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. Make History is a site that was developed by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to give people a place to share their stories of September 11, 2001. Users of the site can add images and video along with text telling of their stories. The stories will be geo-located and displayed on a Google Map in a unique use of Street View.

The Official Google Blog was my source of news for this story.

Applications for Education
A lot of today's high school students and most of today's middle school students are too young to have fully understood all of the ramifications of that day. Make History could be a good site to have students explore to get a better understanding of what happened and how people felt on September 11, 2001.

Bill Nye Tells Kids to Wash Their Hands

Clif Mims posted this video yesterday I just had to pass it along. It's a quick music video reminding kids to wash their hands to prevent the spread of germs. The video goes nicely with these ten videos that I linked to last week. The video also goes well with these lesson plans about preventing the spread of germs.

Tekzilla is one of my favorite Internet video shows because of its daily line-up of quick and simple tech tips. One recent tip was to use Wikis.com to search multiple wikis at once. Watch the video embedded below to learn more.
