Use Drop.io's Upload Widget to Collect Student Work

If your students are in the habit of emailing essays, slideshows, and other creations to you, you know how quickly your inbox can get crowded. One way to resolve that problem is to get all of your students using Google Docs. But if Google Docs isn't an option for your students because of school policy (yes, some schools discourage the use of Google Docs) or other issues, Drop.io offers a solution you might want to explore.

Drop.io offers a simple upload widget that you can embed into your course blog or website. Place the Drop.io upload widget on your blog and your students can upload their work directly to your Drop.io drop from your blog. You can then view your students' work on your Drop.io page and keep your email inbox clutter free. Embedded below are directions for installing the Drop.io upload widget on Blogger blogs and Edublogs blogs.

Here are some previous posts I've written about Drop.io:

Thanks for this posting. It is very timely as I was just looking for a solution like this one for a teacher.

I did find an audio drop box that might be handy for some people. You do have to create an account to get the details.

@Crystal Drop.io also allows for adding of audio files, and even better provides a phone number that allows you to record audio over the phone. Then you can embed the audio widget on a blog or website.

In addition, you can create a guest login with personalized access options. Your students can read each other's essays right there in the drop box and leave comments. It's a great way to make their work even more authentic & teach constructive criticism at the same time.

What a great idea! Might be wise to use the guest login feature, as you mention in your comment above - otherwise you could get all sorts of random stuff sent to you! ;-)

I have used drop.io and it works great for uploading large files as well.

hi
how can i put this code (drop.io) in wordpress? it does not run!
can you help me? thanks

Miguel,
If you're using Wordpress.com to host your blog (example: yourblog.wordpress.com) you cannot use the code. If you're self-hosting with a WordPress blog you might need to run the code through a plugin that supports 3rd party embed codes.

If you use Edublogs to host your blog, all of the plugins you need to run Drop.io widgets is already in place.

Miguel,
Once the file is uploaded it should appear in the drop (account) that you created on Drop.io

For example if I create the drop http://drop.io/mrbyrne and use the code from that drop on my blog anything that is uploaded on my blog using the widget will appear on drop.io/mrbyrne

Hi Miguel,
I'm stumped. I just tried it using your blog and your drop.io and I was able to upload a PNG file. (It's the Google logo). I'm curious to hear what Drop.io support tells you.

I have been looking for an upload widget to collect student work. Drp.io sounded great, unfortunately, the free version puts a huge pink watermark on all uploaded files from the upload widget. Any other ideas?

I love dropio, but it is very quirky and now they have removed the embed code to have a widget. This was really important for my students (so they weren't required to go to another website to drop files). Or maybe it is just my account that has this link removed. Anyone else?

Mr. Harrison said...

Nope, there is no longer any widget option that I can find. I followed the directions above very carefully several times and it looks like drop.io has removed this feature. There is no longer any "More" button that is mentioned in the presentation above. Anyone else? I would love this feature on my classroom blog.

dropio emailed a reply saying they no longer offer widget support but they are working on it. I managed a way to get around this by grabbing the code off the html uploader. click on "add". On the right, above the uploader is says "having trouble? Use the html uploader." View the source code after clicking on this uploader and copy/paste that into your blog.

The widget was why I paid for this service, and taking it away is evil.

They did say they were working on it, but it would take a long time before it is offered again. Based on their very slow responses to problems, I am guessing a "long time" will be months.

Is drop.io compatible with Office 2007/2010 files? I can upload them fine, but when I download it downloads a .zip file with all of the "background" xhtml files that make the Office 2007/2010 file. I sent a help ticket into drop.io but haven't heard back from them yet. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Mr. Byrne said...

Fogleem,

I have not heard of the problem before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I do know that Apple Pages files aren't always compatible with Drop.io
