Planwise Can Help Students Plan Their Financial Futures

Planwise is a free service that is designed to help people manage their budgets and plan for their financial futures. The service can be used for day-to-day budget management. It can also be used to plan for long-term goals like buying a car or a house. Unlike services like Mint.com you do not have to connect a bank account to it in order to use Planwise. Learn more in the video below.

Applications for Education
Personal finance management is one course that I wish every high school would offer to their students. In a course like that a service like Planwise could help students get a better understanding of how to plan for big purchases as well as how to manage shorter term financial decisions.

16 Fun Interactive Games About Nature

Nature is one of the PBS programs that I have enjoyed for as long as I can remember. Today, I found myself looking at the Nature website again where I discovered 16 games and interactive videos about animals and other features of nature. Through the games and videos students can learn about penguins, sea turtles, and eleven other animals. Through the games students can also learn about glaciers, ocean waves, and forensics.
Applications for Education
Fortunately, many Nature episodes are now available to view online. Episodes can be found on the Nature website and on PBS Video. You could use some of the Nature games as a follow-up to watching some of the video clips you could use some of the Nature games.

Here's Nature's latest online video, An Original DUCKumentary.

Watch An Original DUCKumentary on PBS. See more from Nature.

Explore the Dead Sea Scrolls Online

This morning the Official Google Blog had a post about the new imagery of the Dead Sea Scrolls that they have helped to put online for the world to view. The Leon Levy Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library contains more than 5,000 images of parts of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Visitors to the site can explore the featured galleries that include the Ten Commandments, part of the Book of Genesis, and 48 Psalms. The Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library archives can also be explored by language, archeological site, and content.

Most sections of the Dead Sea Scrolls that you find on the Digital Library can be seen in detail by zooming-in on the image. A little ruler is included next to each image so that you can get a better sense of the size of each artifact.

Applications for Education
In addition to exploring the artifacts online, your students can learn about the history of the Dead Sea Scrolls through the Dead Sea Scrolls historical timeline. The timeline traces the scrolls from their writing to their discovery in 1947 to today's work to preserve them.

Explore Mount Everest's Khumbu Glacier in HD

Crossing Mount Everest's Khumbu icefall is the first hazard mountaineers face when attempting to climb Mount Everest from the south side. The route from the south side is the most commonly climbed route. This spring David Breashears (best known for his IMAX film about Everest) captured a high definition gigapixel image of the Khumbu glacier. Glacier Works, which whose work I have featured in the past, has now published that image in a zoomable format. You can zoom in, zoom out, and pan around the image. See if you can count the basecamp tents in the picture.

Applications for Education
I'm adding this new Glacier Works image to my list of resources for teaching about Mount Everest. The image could be good for showing students how fractured the glacier becomes during the spring melt. It's also a good picture for showing people just how many tents and climbers are on Everest in the spring climbing season.
