Digital Children's Library in English and Spanish

The Story Place is a children's digital library produced by the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina. The Story place features digital stories in English and Spanish for students of pre-school age through elementary school. The digital stories are arranged by age group and by theme. I looked at the pre-school story about firefighters and thought it that it is the type of story I would share with my pre-school aged child, if I had kids. Along with the digital stories are activity guides for parents and reading lists.

Application for Education
The Story Place is a great source of digital stories that teachers and parents can use to introduce reading to young students. The digital stories contain audio of each story as well as the text of the story. The parent activities could be printed and sent home with students as a way to encourage reading at home.

Eats, Shoots & Leaves Punctuation Game

The Eats, Shoots & Leaves punctuation game is based on the popular book of the same name written by Lynne Truss. The game presents a series of sample sentences to which users have to decide whether or not punctuation is need and if so where to add it. The game starts with a section about using the apostrophe.

Applications for Education
The Eats, Shoots & Leaves punctuation provides instant feedback to students as they practice the use of punctuation. If using the game online is not an option for your students, the game is still a valuable source of sample problems that you can use with your students in the classroom.

The link to this game now appears to be dead.

On Sugar Blogging Platform Gets Sweeter

On Sugar is a free blogging platform that I raved about last month. Like most blogging platforms On Sugar is very simple to use. On Sugar offers some great, easy-to-use, features that make it a better platform than most including an option to import all of your content from other blogs you've written on other blogging platforms. Click here to read my initial review of On Sugar.

On Friday, On Sugar announced new three column layout themes. These themes allow users to have two side columns on both sides of your main content (the style of Free Technology for Teachers) or users can have two widget columns to the right of the main content. (example here)

Applications for Education
On Sugar is easy enough to use that students in elementary school could learn to use it. On Sugar is also a good way to introduce adult learners to blogging.
