Explore the Sounds of the Symphony at Arts Alive

Arts Alive is an educational website produced by Canada's National Arts Centre. Arts Alive is divided into three main sections; music, theatre, and dance. I recently spent some time exploring the music section of Arts Alive.

In the music section of Arts Alive there is a feature called the Instrument Lab. In the Instrument Lab students can click on an interactive map of an orchestra stage. Students can click on a section of the stage to view and hear the instruments in that section.

The Music Activities and Games section of Arts Alive gives students the chance to compose a short piece using a drag and drop interface. The same section also offers an instrument identification game and a composer identification game.

Applications for Education
Arts Alive offers a selection of resources for teachers. That selection includes downloadable play-along recorder music and lesson plans for teaching about Mozart's and Beethoven's compositions.

JellyCam - A Free Stop Motion Movie Creator

JellyCam is a free program for creating stop motion movies. Using JellyCam you can create stop motion movies using images from your computer or images that you capture via your webcam. Once you've selected images you can quickly arrange them into a sequence. After the sequence is set you can specify how many images you want per frame.

JellyCam uses the Adobe Air platform. If you don't have Adobe Air Runtime it takes just a couple of minutes to install.

Below you can watch a video overview of JellyCam narrated by its creator. (The first few seconds of the video are blurry).

This is my first stop motion movie made with JellyCam.

Applications for Education
JellyCam doesn't offer an option for including sound yet, but it could still be useful for making time-lapse videos of a time-consuming process. For example, a game of Chess could be turned into a video that just shows the moves made by players. In a more classroom-oriented example would be to make a time-lapse video of the process of osmosis by capturing pictures of a raisin in water over time then arranging them in JellyCam.

College Packing List - Create and Share Lists

College Packing List is a free service designed to help students plan their moves to college. A categorized default list of items is provided by College Packing List. Students can add or delete items from each category as needed. If there is an item on the packing list that a student needs to purchase he can move it to a shareable shopping list. Students can share their lists through Facebook.

Applications for Education
College Packing List could be a handy resource for students as they plan their moves to dorms in the fall. Sharing the lists between roommates via Facebook could be helpful in avoiding duplicate purchases of some items. Sharing the list with family members could be a good way to help out that aunt or uncle who isn't sure what to buy as a high school graduation gift.
