Develop Math Skills With Beluga Learning for iPads

Beluga Learning is a free iPad app that my friend Rod Berger recommended to me a couple of weeks ago. Beluga Learning provides a game based environment in which students practice mathematics skills. The games range from basic number line activities to some basic Algebra activities. Students create Beluga Learning accounts without using an email address. Beluga Learning keeps track of which skills students have mastered and which ones they need to spend more time practicing.

Glassboard - Private, Mobile Group Messaging

Glassboard is an app for Android, Windows, and iOS phones that enables you to create and participate in private groups. Using the app you can create and participate in as many groups as you like. Kind of like when you use Google Plus, you specify which groups can see the content you share. You can share notes, links, pictures, and videos. The content you share and the content others share with you is displayed in a news feed on your mobile device.

Applications for Education
Glassboard, like Beluga that I reviewed last winter, could be a handy app to use when you take students on a field trip. By having everyone use the app you can quickly communicate important information like meeting times to everyone at once.

Beluga - Mobile Group Messaging

Update: As of December 15, 2011 Beluga is shutting down.

Beluga is a new service for sending messages to private groups you create within your mobile device's contacts. Beluga has free apps for Android and iOS devices. Beluga can also be used from the mobile-friendly Beluga website. You can use Beluga to send basic text messages to the groups you've created. Beluga also supports sending multimedia messages to your groups.

To get started using Beluga go to the site and choose the app you need. Then create your groups and start sending messages. If people in your contacts don't have smart phones they can still receive and send SMS messages.

Applications for Education
If you've ever taken a large group of students on a field trip, you know the stress that can come with keeping track of all of them and getting them all back on the bus. Beluga could be used by field trip chaperones to quickly communicate with and keep track of their charges.
