Big Huge Labs: Do Cool Stuff with Digital Photos

Big Huge Labs has been around since 2005. In internet years, that is an incredibly long time! There is a good reason this site has been around for over a decade. It is free, easy to use, and it doesn't require an account to use it. However, Big Huge Labs does have an option to create a free education account which provides an ad-free experience and allows students to send their creations directly to their teacher.

Big Huge Labs lets you upload images directly from your computer  or upload them from Flickr, Instagram, Facebook, or Dropbox. Once you've uploaded an image you can use them to create motivational posters, pop art posters, vintage photo booth strips, movie posters, calendars, and so much more!

Applications for Education
Students could create a magazine poster to summarize a novel or make a profile of a character from a book. They could make trading cards of historical figures or make pocket albums of projects they have created in class. There are really no limits on what students across grade levels can do with Big Huge Labs.

Teaching With Trading Cards

Big Huge Labs and Read Write Think offers trading card templates that can be used by students is to create a set of trading cards about characters in a novel, to create a set of cards about people of historical significance, or to create cards about places that they're studying in their geography lessons. In the following videos I provide demonstrations of how students can use these tools.

Create Motivational Posters and Cards on Big Huge Labs

Big Huge Labs offers a great collection of free tools for creating digital products with your pictures. Some of the tools that they offer include motivational poster creators, magazine cover creators, and trading card templates.

The Trading Card generator that allows you to create trading cards about people, places, and events both real and fictional. To create your card you simply upload a picture or import one from Flickr, Instagram, or Facebook then add some text details about the person featured in the card.

Applications for Education
There are a lot of ways that educators and students could use the free products offered by Big Huge Labs. The magazine cover generator could be used by students as the cover page to a biography or autobiography writing assignment. The poster templates could be used to create posters about classroom rules. The badge template could be useful for the first days of school for students and teachers to learn each other's names and express some personality at the same time.

Create Trading Cards for Fictional and Historical Characters

Big Huge Labs offers a great selection of free tools for building digital products with your pictures. One of the tools that I like is their Trading Card generator that allows you to create trading cards about people, places, and events both real and fictional. To create your card you simply upload a picture or import one from Flickr, Instagram, or Facebook then add some text details about the person featured in the card. I created one about my dog, Morrison.

Applications for Education
As I wrote when I featured Read Write Think's Trading Card Creator earlier this year, the Big Huge Labs Trading Card generator could be used by students is to create a set of trading cards about characters in a novel, to create a set of cards about people of historical significance, or to create cards about places that they're studying in their geography lessons.

Big Huge Labs - Create Posters, Magazines, and More

Big Huge Labs has been around for years, but it's worth sharing again for those that aren't familiar with it. Big Huge Labs provides an array of tools for showcasing your digital images in the form of a magazine cover, a poster, a puzzle, and many other forms. Using Big Huge Labs does not require any registration and you can download copies of your creations without creating an account. That said, they do offer you the option to create an account in which you can save your work. I used the magazine cover template to create a cover featuring myself and Jeff Utecht talking at NECC 2009.
