OpenEd Adds Thousands of New Science Resources

OpenEd offers a massive library of free educational games, videos, practice assessments, and tutorials. This week they expanded their catalog by adding more than 1,000 new resources aligned to Next Generation Science Standards. These resources come from notable content producers including SciShow, CrashCourse, and Minute Physics all of which have been featured many times on FreeTech4Teachers.com.

All of the resources available through OpenEd can be shared with your students through the popular Google Classroom and Otus learning management systems. You can also use the OpenEd Google Docs Add-on to create lesson plans that incorporate the resources you find in OpenEd's library. The video below demonstrates how to do that.

OpenEd Helps You Find Resources to Share In Your LMS

OpenEd (formerly known as OpenEd.io) offers a huge index of educational games, videos, practice assessments, tutorials, and more. One of the strengths of OpenEd is that you can search for resources according to Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Another of OpenEd's strengths is its integration with multiple learning management systems including Google Classroom, Otus, and Schoology.

Within the Otus learning management system you can use OpenEd to search for materials to share with students through your online bookshelf of resources.

OpenEd Offers Thousands of Quizzes and Review Materials to Share in Google Classroom

OpenEd is a service that has offers a massive catalog of educational videos, games, and practice assessments that you can browse by topic, grade level, or Common Core standard. Today, OpenEd announced an improved integration with Google Classroom.

There are two ways that you can use OpenEd resources with Google Classroom. First, you can share resources from OpenEd to your Google Classroom classes by using the "share to Google Classroom" button within OpenEd resources. Second, you can now import your Google Classroom roster into OpenEd. Importing your roster will allow you to create collections of resources to share with your students instead of just sharing individual items.

My favorite aspect of OpenEd is its search tool. Rather than searching and hoping to find a video on YouTube that matches the standard(s) you're addressing in a lesson, you can start with the standard and have OpenEd locate videos for you. Likewise, it's easy to find and share games and quizzes that match the topics you're teaching.

OpenEd Launches a New Site for Finding and Sharing Lesson Materials

OpenEd is a service that has offers a huge catalog of educational videos, games, and practice assessments that you can browse by topic, grade level, or Common Core standard. The service allows teachers to create collections of resources that they share with their students in an online classroom. This week OpenEd released a new beta version of their service.

The beta version of OpenEd includes a selection of pre-built lesson plans full of videos, games, and quizzes for grades 6 through 12 for math and Language Arts. When you create a class on the beta version of OpenEd you will asked to select a grade and the standards that your course addresses. If your selections are math or language arts standards for students in grades six through twelve, you will see the pre-built lessons immediately appear in your OpenEd classroom. You can remove the pre-built lessons and or add more content to them.

Common Core Quest – Practice Quizzes and Video Lessons on ELA & Math Standards

Common Core Quest is a new and free Android app from OpenEd.io. The free app gives students access to hundreds of practice quizzes aligned to Common Core standards in math and language arts. Before and after taking a quiz students can watch short video lessons that address the skills needed to master the standards contained in the quizzes.

To use Common Core Quest a student selects his or her grade then selects the math or language arts standards he or she is working toward mastering. (Teachers will probably have to provide directions to students and their parents as to which standards they should be working toward). The student will earn digital badges when he or she shows mastery of a standard through quiz scores.


Applications for Education
Common Core Quest currently offers activities for every middle school and high school Common Core math and language arts standard. Coverage of elementary school standards is being added (currently about half of the standards are included). A student can invite his or her teacher to view the progress that he or she is making toward each goal in Common Core Quest. Students can invite teacher either by email or by class code if the teacher has created a class account on OpenEd.io.

The Open Ed assessment tools allow you to associate images and videos with specific questions. OpenEd Releases a New Tool for Creating Common Core-aligned Practice Assessments

OpenEd is a free service that has created a huge catalog of educational videos and games that you can browse by topic, grade level, or Common Core standard. The service launched last fall and has steadily added new features since then. The latest addition to OpenEd is an assessment creation tool.

OpenEd's assessment creation tool is designed to help teachers create Common Core-aligned assessments. To get started you have to create an accountant on OpenEd.io. Click the "assessments" tab then the "create" button to start building your standards-aligned resources. After titling your assessment you can choose the standards that your assessment will address. You can choose as many standards as you like. With your standards identified you can move on to adding questions to your assessment. Assessment questions can be created from scratch you can choose some of the questions that OpenEd recommends based on your standards choices. You can also search for questions on OpenEd and add them to your assessments.

In my testing of the new OpenEd assessment creation tool I had the best experience when I created questions from scratch. The first set of standards that I selected, high school geography, did not yield any question suggestions. When I tested it again with elementary school language arts standards I did find suggested questions.

OpenEd encourages teachers to publish their assessments publicly on OpenEd so that other teachers can incorporate their questions into new assessments. Remember, these are practice assessments.

Create Public Courses on OpenEd

Since it was launched six months OpenEd.io has seen a steady stream of updates. The latest update offers support for public courses. Any course that you create using the Common Core-aligned resources in OpenEd.io can be shared publicly. This update should create a larger pool of shared resources for teachers and students.

As a registered OpenEd user (registration is free and takes less than thirty seconds to complete) you can create courses and playlists of videos and other materials that you find in the OpenEd directory. You can align your courses and playlists to Common Core standards. If you choose to align your course to a standard, OpenEd will suggest materials to you. OpenEd supports inclusion of assessments within your course.

This week OpenEd released a free iPad app for teachers and students.

Teachers can use the free iPad app to locate videos, games, and assessments. Teachers can search for materials according to standard, content area, grade level, and material type.

Students can use the free OpenEd iPad app to log into the courses that they are members of and view the materials that their teachers have shared with them.

This week OpenEd.io released a free Android app that students can use to view the videos and other resources their teachers share with them.

Applications for Education
Using the OpenEd.io Android app could be a convenient option for students who want to access shared content on their tablets or phones. I'd like to see OpenEd offer an iPad app in the future too.
