Something New Coming from Zoho

Late last week, Zoho announced that they have something new and exciting to release on Tuesday of this coming week. Zoho says this new thing, whatever it is, is based on a service that many Zoho users are already using. Zoho makes a lot of very good productivity services that are of value to educators so it will be interesting to see if this new service will also be useful to educators. Based on the short video preview (embedded below) it looks like the new offering will be a collaborative tool.

Zoho Meeting Could Be Good for Online Tutoring

Zoho Meeting is one of the many excellent products in the Zoho productivity suite. Using Zoho Meeting you can host an online conversation around a presentation. If you already have a Zoho account you can host a free one-to-one meeting. All other meetings are on a fee structure.
Zoho Meeting could be an option for providing one-to-one tutoring over the Internet. The slideshow embedded below will show you how to get started.

Zoho Writer Now Works Offline Too

I haven't written about Zoho Writer in quite a while because, truth be told, I use Google Docs for all of my document creation. For the record though, I prefer Zoho Show over Google Presentation and use Zoho Presentation to create and host most of my slideshows.

Yesterday, Zoho announced an improvement to Zoho Writer that allows users to work on their Zoho Writer documents without being online. Google Docs has had this option for a while so it was only a matter of time until Zoho Writer offered it too.

Applications for Education
Being able to use Zoho Writer and Google Docs offline allows students to write and edit then sync-up documents when they're back online. This is a particularly useful option for students who have laptops, but don't have Internet access at home or at any other place where they do school work without an Internet connection.

Zoho Docs - Chat and Edit at the Same Time

I'm a big fan of Zoho Show, in fact I use it to create all of my slide shows, and I think that Zoho Writer is a good product too. Until now if I was working in Zoho Writer and I wanted to open a slide show I had to switch over to Zoho Show to open it because each type of file was stored in a different place. Today, Zoho announced the release of Zoho Docs which will allow me to store and access my documents, slide shows, and spreadsheets in one central location. Google Docs has had this capability for quite a while so it was only a matter of time before Zoho caught up. Zoho didn't stop at catching up to Google Docs, they tried to surpass it by integrating Zoho Chat into Zoho Docs.

Applications for Education
Users have long been able to collaborate on documents in near real time using Zoho Writer or Google Docs. This is great for editing a piece of work, but not so great for commenting or communicating before making a change. Using Zoho Docs with the integrated Zoho Chat feature could be a great way for students to collaborate and comment on each other's work in real time. This could also be a useful feature for teachers to give live feedback to students that are not in the room with them. I'm thinking this could be great for teachers holding online courses.

Below is a short video introduction to Zoho Docs.

New Zoho Show Features - Including Export to PPT

While I was on vacation, I missed the announcement of some great new features available on Zoho Show. In all there are eight new options on Zoho Show, I've highlighted the three most relevant to educational use below. Visit the Zoho Blog for the entire list of enhancements.

Presentations created with Zoho Show can now be exported as PPT, PPS, ODP, and PDF files. The new export options are useful for people who want to save a copy of their presentation on their local computer or would prefer to email presentations as attachments.

The enhancement to Zoho Show that students will really like is the option to undo or redo up to 50 actions. This is similar to option in Google Documents to revert to previous version. The difference is rather than reverting to a previous version where you will lose the edits made after that version, users can select specific actions to undo or redo.

Last month Zoho announced the capability to use Zoho Show for making remote presentations. In this latest batch of improvements Zoho has announced that Zoho Show can be used to make remote presentations interactive with the inclusion of a chat side bar. This upgrade makes Zoho Show a nice tool for sharing notes and information with students that aren't in the classroom with you. It could also be used by students to chat with each other about a slide show/ notes while they are studying for a test.

Another Cool Feature of Zoho Show

Today on the Zoho product blog, Arvind posted directions about using Zoho Show to make a remote presentation. The process seems pretty straight-forward and it doesn't require any software to be downloaded by you or your presentation attendees. Visit the Zoho Blog for step by step directions and a short how-to presentation.

Applications for Education
Zoho Show is a great web-based tool for creating slide show presentations. Most of my students actually prefer Zoho Show to Google Presentation because they feel that there are more editing options.
The Zoho Show live presentation tool may be a tool through which students can do some peer-editing of their classmates' presentations. The Zoho Show live presentation option could be a useful means for students to practice giving presentations online before presenting to a live audience.
