The Decade in Magazine Covers

Covering the Decade in Magazine Covers is a neat little video that I found on the US History Teachers Blog. The video shows magazine covers containing some of most important and popular stories of the last decade.

Applications for Education
If you and your students can get past the "Mario Brothers esque" music, the video is a nice review of the decade.

The Decade in Business - 120 Images and Articles

Through Jeffery Hill's English Blog I recently learned about the Guardian's Decade in Business infographic. The Decade in Business is comprised of 120 images representing various business stories from the past ten years. Click on any image in the infographic to learn more about that story. Most of the stories are based in Europe, but some have a more global basis.

Applications for Education
Teachers of economics may find The Decade in Business to be a good reference for students studying the ups and downs of the economy in the 21st century.

NY Times - Picturing the Past 10 Years

Picturing the Past 10 Years is a neat "opinion chart" created by Phillip Niemeyer at The New York Times. Picturing the Past 10 Years is a ten by twelve grid of icons representing key issues and events from each year of the past decade. The grid has columns for each year of the decade and rows for categories such as culture, business, and champion.

Applications for Education
Picturing the Past 10 Years could be a good model for having students create their own "picturing the past" icon charts. Students could create a chart for the last year or the decade. The concept could also be applied to other eras in history.

8 Good Decade in Review Videos

Watch Mojo has produced eight good "decade in review" videos covering a variety of topics. The topics in the Watch Mojo "decade in review" playlist include politics, science & space, and entertainment. I've embedded the politics video below.

While these videos are good, I encourage you to use a service like Quietube for displaying them in your classroom as some of the other videos produced by Watch Mojo push the limits of PG-13.

Applications for Education
There are many "decade in review" videos floating around the Internet right now. It's interesting to note what video producers do or do not include in their recaps of the decade. As an activity in media literacy you could have students watch a few different videos and then discuss why a producer would include certain events while leaving out other events.

The Decade in Review from Newsweek

Newsweek has created a "decade in review" video highlighting the best and worst of the last ten years. I'm not sure it's "everything you need to know" as the video claims, but it's a good start.

Applications for Education
As the first decade of the 21st Century draws to a close, I'm sure we'll be seeing more videos like this over the next few weeks. After watching this video or one like it you could ask students what they would add to the video. You could also use this as a model for having students create their own "decade in review" videos. Students could use one of these tools for making their videos.
