Knowmia - Create, Share, and Watch Video Lessons

Knowmia is a new service that got a lot of tech press yesterday. The site was started by the same people who brought us the Flip camera. Now they're trying to break into the flipped classroom with Knowmia.

Knowmia is a website and an iPad app for creating, sharing, and viewing video lessons. The website portion of Knowmia is a collection of videos made by teachers for students. There are roughly 7,000 videos in the Knowmia collection right now. Many of the videos are pulled from YouTube while others are hosted on Knowmia. The videos are arranged by subject and topic. Registered teachers can upload and tag their own videos.

The Knowmia iPad app is an app for creating your own whiteboard videos. I installed the app and gave it a try this evening. I found the app to have far more creation options than the similar Showme and Educreations apps. You can draw free-hand on the whiteboard screen or insert pre-made shapes. You can also use pictures and video clips in your video lesson.

Applications for Education
If you're thinking about trying some "flipped" lessons this year, take a look at Knowmia and the Knowmia iPad app. And if you're not using the flipped model, Knowmia has promise as a good place to find educational videos that your students can use to review or get "on demand" help when they cannot connect with you.

Right now it appears that only registered teachers can upload to Knowmia. Hopefully, they'll add a student submission section in the future. That way students could use the Knowmia iPad app to create videos to demonstrate their understandings of a topic.

Win a Flip Camera from C-SPAN

Last winter I shared with you some information for getting a free 3'x6' Presidential Timeline Poster from C-SPAN. If you took advantage of that offer, C-SPAN wants to hear from you. Send C-SPAN an email to educate@c-span.org with an explanation of how you're using that poster. Your email will enter you in a drawing for one of five Flip video cameras. If this is your first time reading about C-SPAN's Presidential Timeline and you're interested in getting a copy for your classroom, there are still posters available here.

20+ Ways to Use Flip Cameras in the Classroom

Last Friday I posted a Google Docs presentation titled Many Ways to Use Flip Video Cameras in the Classroom. At the time the presentation had only three slides. I put out an invitation to anyone that wanted to add ideas to the presentation and as of this writing there are 57 collaborators. In total there are now 21 slides.

Before I started Many Ways to Use Flip Cameras in the Classroom I looked to see if Tom Barrett already had a presentation on the topic. It turns out he did have one, but I somehow overlooked it. Here's Tom's 43 Interesting Ways to use your Pocket Video Camera in the Classroom.

I'd still love to have more contributors to Many Ways to Use Flip Cameras in the Classroom, if you're interested in adding your ideas please fill in this form and I'll send you an invitation to collaborate.

Many Ways to Use Flip Cameras in the Classroom

Earlier today I Tweeted that I got a Flip video camera to record my presentations. Adam Truitt replied with this message "now waiting on your post - "100 classroom ideas for the flip camera" :-)" Adam's message reminded me of Tom Barrett's Interesting Ways series. I put the two ideas together and started a Google Docs presentation of ways that Flip video cameras can be used in the classroom. I've already invited Adam to add his thoughts and I'd like to open it up to as many people as possible. If you have something to add to this presentation just send me your email address in the form below and I'll send you an invite to collaborate.
