Save the Trees - Try These Tools to Conserve Paper in School

The new school year has arrived for many and is arriving soon for others. That means that soon network printers in schools all across the land will be filled with papers printed and forgotten. Some printing seems to be unavoidable while other printing, like that 33 page Wikipedia article to capture two paragraphs, is completely avoidable. Here are some services that can help you and your students conserve paper in your school.

When you receive a document in email that needs to be signed, don't print it. Instead of printing it try using HelloSign. HelloSign is a free tool for digitally signing documents. HelloSign can be used as a Chrome extension, as a Gmail plug-in, as an iOS app, or as an Android app. The service is free to use for three documents per month. You can earn additional documents by inviting colleagues to use HelloSign.

Printliminator is a handy little bookmarklet for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Printliminator allows you to highlight a webpage and select only the elements which you wish to print. You can install Printliminator in seconds by just clicking and dragging it into your browser's toolbar.

Evernote Clearly wasn't specifically designed for saving ink and paper when printing, but that is one of the benefits of using it. Clearly strips the sidebar content of a webpage. You can send the cleaned-up version directly to your Evernote account for easy reading whenever you open your Evernote account. You can print the cleaned-up article from your Evernote account.

Print Edit - Trim Webpages Before You Print Them

We've all seen it at one time or another. Your student finds an article online that she likes so much that she just has to print it out and promptly proceeds to print the entire article complete with sidebar content and two or three blank pages mixed in for good measure. Fortunately, there are some tools that can prevent that kind of costly waste of paper and ink. I've previously featured three such tools here. Print Edit is another tool that you can teach students to use before printing out a lengthy webpage.

Print Edit is a Firefox add-on that allows you to edit the content of a webpage in your "print preview" screen. With Print Edit installed once you enter the print preview screen you can highlight and delete sections of a webpage before you print them. Using Print Edit could prevent the waste of a lot of paper and ink in your classroom or school print center.

3 Tools to Help You Save Paper & Ink in Your Classroom

This year, one of my goals is to make my classroom as paperless as Shelly Blake-Plock's classroom. However, as much as I strive toward that goal, as Michael Scott would remind us, a lot of business is still done on paper. Even if we still have to print items, we don't have to wasteful in our printing habits. Here are three tools that can help you reduce how much paper and ink you use when printing materials for your classroom.

Print What You Like is a simple web tool that lets users select just a portion of a website. This is particularly useful for printing articles from websites or blogs that do not have a "printer friendly" option. Print What You Like is not simply a cropping tool, users can also remove images from the background or foreground of a website before printing.

If you have ever wanted to print an article from a blog or a website, but wish you could do it without printing all of the ads and widgets in the side columns, you should take a look at PrintFriendly. PrintFriendly strips away all of the ads and side bar content allowing you to print only the article on the page. There are two ways to use PrintFriendly. You can copy and paste an article's url into the PrintFriendly homepage or use the PrintFriendly bookmarklet. I tried it both ways and much prefer using the bookmarklet as it doesn't require any toggling between browser tabs or windows. Below is a video overview of PrintFriendly.

Printliminator is a handy little bookmarklet for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Printliminator allows you to highlight a webpage and select only the elements which you wish to print. Applications for Education
If you've ever found an online article that you wanted to print for classroom use, you know that ads inserted into the text or excessively large headers can result in using more ink and paper than necessary. Printliminator allows you to remove those unnecessary elements and print just the text thereby saving your school paper and ink costs.
