Best of the Web - Spring 2015 - #NCTIES15

Yesterday, at the NCTIES15 conference I gave my updated Best of the Web presentation to the largest audience yet at the conference. Based on the fact that we crashed Kahoot with nearly 500 people trying to play at once and not everyone in the room could see the screen I would estimate that we had 600 or more people in the room. Postach.io Is Ending Free Blogs - Move Your Data Soon

Postach.io is a service that for the last couple of years has allowed you to quickly and easily create a blog through your Evernote account. This morning I received an email informing me that they are discontinuing their free plans and forcing everyone to either pony-up for a subscription or move their content to another service. You can probably guess which course of action I will recommend. March 17th is the deadline to buy a Postach.io subscription or move to another service for your blogging needs.

Tackk and Blogger are the two blogging services that I recommend most frequently these days. Embedded below you will find directions for using both services. Tackk has a great education page available here.

As you'll see in the video you can sign up for Tackk in a variety of ways including using your Edmodo or Google credentials.

Explore Greenland, Iceland, and Other Cold Climates in Google Maps

I've always loved maps and field trips. But there limitations to what a map can tell you about a place. And there are certainly limitations to where we can take our students on field trips. Google Maps Street View imagery allows students to virtually explore far-off places in a way that flat paper maps cannot. Some of the latest Street View imagery added to Google Maps can virtually take us to Greenland. The imagery takes us through fjords and the ruins of ancient Viking settlements on the island of Greenland.


Head south and east from Greenland and Google's Street View imagery can take you on a tour of cool places in Iceland.


Head very far south of Greenland and Iceland and you can explore parts of Antarctica in Google Maps Street View.

Google Docs for iPad Gets Another Update

If you update your iPad today, you will notice that Google Docs for iPad has been updated again. The updated version of Google Docs for iPad enables you to make copies of your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on your iPad. This update is another small step toward making the Google Docs iPad app as useful as the Google Docs in the web browser.

Some other behind the scenes updates to the performance of the app were added this week too. Those updates don't change how the app works. You can read about those on the Google Apps update blog.
